Fairy Gardens: The Best Groundcovers To Attract Fairies
Build A Foundation Of Soft, Comfy Groundcover For Your Fairy Garden
The foundation of any garden starts with a good groundcover but it's even more important for Fairy Gardens.
As the name implies, groundcover plants are typically low to the ground, making it easy for someone as small as a fairy to navigate the garden without getting lost behind too many tall plants.
They provide a thick, lush carpet that makes your garden more comfortable and inviting for the fairies.
And because they essentially 'cover the ground' you can use groundcover plants to cover any terrain - whether it's a hillside, a rocky slope, or even just the edges of your flower bed.
When most folks think of groundcovers they picture ivy or moss, and they seem kind of boring and bland. And you're right - fairies prefer a bit of color. So, after talking to the fairies in my own miniature garden, I've put together a list of some of their favorite groundcovers.
Designing Your Fairy Garden
Fairies are just tiny little creatures so they don't need acres and acres of garden space. Tuck your fairy garden into a quiet corner, under a shady tree or even create miniature gardens in containers to welcome the fairies onto your patio or deck.
Create a Magical Landscape
Use these ground covers to create a magical landscape. Because most will grow in even poor or rocky soil, they'll grow right over terrain that's rocky or bumpy and give your miniature garden the appearance of having little hills and valleys.
Most ground covers, once they're established, don't need any extra help to start spreading over your garden. But do be careful when planting miniature container gardens. The soil in containers tends to dry out more quickly than garden soil so you'll want to stay on top of watering.
Ground covers are ideal anywhere in your fairy garden because they're a lush, green backdrop for taller plants and flowers. And let's face it - if you were a fairy, you'd probably prefer a nice bed of soft moss or tiny flowers over a bed of rocks or mulch, too!
